Internet cords are annoying, and if we have a laptop, it keeps us chained to the same spot anytime we get online. Setting up wireless internet in our house is very easy. Here's how
Things for Need
· Wireless router
· Ethernet cord
· Wireless cards into all but one computer
1. Make sure all our computers have wireless cards. Think of wireless internet as like radio airwaves. Our router will send out an internet signal through to the air, just like as a radio. Our internet signal will go through our house, and possibly to a couple of neighbors. With a radio, in order to pick up the signal, we must have an antenna. With wireless internet, our antennae are a wireless card.
All of the new computers come with wireless cards already installed. However, if we are working with an old computer, we will need to check. Look at the back of our computer. We will likely have a phone jack, but if we have a wireless card, we shall have another connector that looks like a phone jack, only is slightly bigger. If we have this, we are wireless enabled.
To set up with a wireless network, all computers must be having wireless enabled. There is one exception. One computer is allowed to be for the non-wireless enabled. This computer becomes the "host" computer, and the whole network is set up around this one.
2. Once we have determined that our computers are wireless enabled, the next step is to set up our modem. Wireless internet only works with broadband internet, so our internet service provider should have given us a modem. Set up our modem per their instructions. They will have given us a CD to go through, that should be self explananatory.
3. Once our modem is set up, then we need to add in the router. Disconnect to the computer from the modem. Instead by using the same Ethernet cord, connect to the modem for the router.
4. using with a different Ethernet cord, connect to the router for the computer. Install the router on the computer by using the CD it came with. The router will ask us to create a key. This is a password that will allow us to get in to our internet. Because internet signals could be picked up several houses away, it is very common for the people to use an internet signal from their neighbors.
There is no way for know if the people are using our signal, and it does not effect our browsing in any way. However, a good computer hacker can use an unprotected signal to get into our computer and steal personal information. Always protect our signal.
5. Now, run through the Set up Wireless Internet wizard on our Windows software. We shall need to run through this on the host, and all other computers.
6. Once we have run it through all computers, we are finished. We should be able to pick up signal from all computers in the house. If our host computer is wireless enabled, we should be able to disconnect it from the router. If it is not, then we are ready to go.
